Top Hair Trends for 2019

The start of the year always brings with it a longing for change. We want fresh starts and new ideas, so the early part of the year is a great time for planning and taking the first steps towards achieving your dream hair.

For anyone looking for style inspiration for hair, I’ve put a few tips together on what will be looking hot this year.

Colour change

Blonde is big news again. Not the whiter than white, bleached blonde locks of last year, nor the festival favourite rose gold trend, this time blonde is heating up. Warmer golden tones are likely to be amongst the most popular shades.

If you are planning a colour change, speak to your stylist as soon as you can and plan to ease yourself into the colour change. Remember that any dramatic changes will have an impact on the colour you will be wearing and make-up too, so it’s best to plan ahead.

If you have dark brown hair, subtle, sun-kissed highlights will be popular, again adding warmth, tone and texture to styles.

Big it up

It’s true - the blow-dry is back in a big way. Lots of volume, waves and bouncy hair will be around, which always looks fabulous. There will be a definite nod to the 80s, but this time round things will be much softer and more natural. Loose waves and manageable volume are the order of the day, both of which work well loose, as half up-dos, and with hair fully up - it’s a really glamorous look.

Hair with volume also works really well with decorative hair pieces or flowers pinned into loose curls - choose a seasonal bloom to be perfectly on trend. Remember, with big hair less is often more in that you may only need one single floral adornment, whereas sleeker styles lend themselves to more intricate embellishments. It’s an 80s vibe, but glam.

Pretty ponytails

High ponytails are going to be a big look this year. We’re not talking your rough and ready gym look here, but rather super-sleek, high-gloss finishes that are stylish and elegant. Forget the chignon, use a floral hairpiece around a ponytail for a fresh, relaxed yet glamorous style. Team your pony with barrette clips fastened just above the temple for a modern twist.

Braids

Braids have been spotted all over the fashion runways recently, with everything from multi-strand braids to fishtails making the grade. Braids can be used in all sorts of wonderfully inventive ways and lend themselves to embellishments, either natural and floral, or jewelled and embellished. A high-shine or jewelled accessory at the nape of the neck will take your braid from boho to bang on trend. Large, medieval-style clasps look amazing with a tight fishtail braid below, while several braids pulled together across longer hair looks very dramatic - all very Brittania!

Short back and sides

Guys’s styles are looking sharp – expect to see the side parting making a return. It works with short styles, with a longer length on top, or with longer styles all over and slicked back. Tapered buzz cuts are still popular, with varying degrees of fade at the neckline. Talk to your stylist to make sure you time the latest cut perfectly.
